Description: This collection of a missionary priest contains biographical information, correspondence, diaries, financial information and miscellaneous writings, and sermons. The biographical files contains several newspaper articles. Included is a leaflet written by Kundig noting some facts about Detroit during the cholera epidemic of 1834. This file also contains research correspondence from Archbishop Messmer and Peter Leo Johnson. The bulk of the correspondence files (1827-1848) contain letters Kundig wrote to family members both before and after his arrival in America; original letters and typescripts are in German. The diaries (Oct. 1827 - April 1828) give detailed descriptions of Kundig's life and his plans to depart with John M. Henni for America. English and German typescripts of the diaries are found in the collection. This collection includes a book containing financial information (1848-1853) during the time Kundig served in the Franklin, WI area. The book also contains miscellaneous writings. Undated sermon books and sermon notes (1864-1868) are also found in the collection.

Kundig, Martin, 1805-1879

A native of Switzerland, who came to America in 1828, and finished his studies for the priesthood in Bardstown, Ky. After a few years in Cincinnati, in 1833 he came to Detroit where he remained 9 years. During the cholera epidemic of 1834 he established a hospital, and later did much for poor relief.
